Fishing Breaks Scotland
Scotland has over six thousand lochs, ranging from small hill lochs to
some of the largest freshwater bodies in the UK, offering a wide variety
of fish stocks including salmon, trout, grayling, perch and chubb. There
are also hundreds of stillwater fisheries throughout the country and more
than a hundred quality salmon and trout rivers ranging from small spate
rivers to the world renowned. In addition, Scotland offers sea angling
excursions and tranquil bucolic spots where the keen angler can engage
in canal and pike fishing.
The fishing in central and west Scotland is extensive with many excellent
fisheries, lochs and rivers. Within 40 minutes from Glasgow, an endless
selection of deep-sea lochs, secluded coves, upland streams and fresh
water lochs are waiting to be discovered. Why not try your hand at fly
fishing on Loch Achray, Loch Katrine or Loch Lomond, perhaps even one
of the fisheries like Bangour Reservoir or Ardgowan. All of these are
within reasonable commuting distance of Glasgow.
As an alternative to fresh water fishing, an excellent variety of locations
for sea angling are to be found. In the west, the Clyde Estuary in Inverclyde
and across the water at Helensburgh and Kilcreggan offer superb spots.
The Ayrshire coast is also a popular destination for sea angling, providing
day-long excursions and trips to the Firth of Clyde, from Ailsa Craig
to the Isle of Arran and Cumbrae.
Other areas worth a fishing visit include the Borders, in particular the
trout and salmon fishing on the Tweed and sea fishing off the rugged eastern
coastline. Further north the Lothian region provides superb fishing lochs
and the Edinburgh area offers mainly rainbow and brown trout on a variety
of still waters. The Tay Estuary provides wonderful sea trout fishing
from the shore, first class fly fishing venues in Fife and the finest
salmon and trout rivers including the world famous River Tay. The Scottish
Highlands and Islands also offer a wealth of salmon and trout rivers,
freshwater hill lochs and sea lochs. The River Spey in Grampian is one
of the world's finest salmon fishing rivers.
Coarse angling is becoming increasingly popular and Scotland offers plenty
of opportunities with a variety of lochs and canals to choose from. For
those preferring a spot of sea fishing, there are a number of companies
that offer guiding and boat charter for groups or individuals.
Very central and within reasonable traveling distance of most of the country's
favourite fishing spots, Glasgow is the ideal base during your fishing
trip in Scotland.
