What's on in Glasgow2009 Festivals.Glasgow is regarded as one of the UK’s foremost destinations for festivals and cultural events, most of which have been an integral part of the city’s civic calendar for a number of years. Its myriad of colourful and vibrant festivals not only enchants Glaswegians but also attracts a wealth of visitors from overseas and other parts of the UK every year. Live music and the performing arts play a significant role in Glasgow’s vibrant festival scene at various times of the year. Summer festivals and open-air events include the multi-arts West End Festival showcasing existing and emerging talent from music, theatrical and artistic arenas. Likewise, the Glasgow International Jazz Festival draws in thousands of visitors and world-renowned performers from the Jazz and Blues circuit, centred aroung the Speigletent in George Sqaure. Held in January of each year, Celtic Connections is inarguably the largest showcase of the year, celebrating Celtic Arts, Music and Culture from Scotland, Wales, Canada and the Celtic Heartlands of Continental Europe. Like every year, Glasgow’s festival calendar culminates with a bang over the Christmas and New Year period with a the Glasgow on Ice spectacular in George Square leading up to the city’s sensational Hogmanay celebrations, when over 100,000 people attend a host of electrifying events and concerts staged on the 31st of December to bring in the New Year.
