Going Out in Glasgow - Nightlife.Comedy Clubs.In recent years, Glasgow has experienced a resurgence in comedy clubs complimenting other larger music hall venues that have showcased the finest of the comedy world over the years. One of the city's longest standing comedy and variety institutions is the ever-popular Pavilion Theatre, built in 1904 and holding a capacity of over 1440. The Pavilion is Glasgow's only variety music-hall theatre and is a regular purveyor of the UK's finest acts in variety comedy with the likes of Freddie Starr, Ken Dodd, Cannon and Ball as well as generous helping of young alternative comedians including Ed Byrne, Dylan Moran and Paddy McGuinness. From 2000 onwards, Glasgow's comedy circuit has developed astronomically around the introduction of new comedy clubs offering audiences a more intimate ambience. Established in Edinburgh in 1995, The Stand Comedy Club opened its second venue in Glasgow and is the city's first established comedy club, housed in the basement of a former secondary school in the city's Woodlands Road. From the outset, The Stand has proven to be a success and contributes to half of the ticket sales between the two clubs, averaging around 700 tickets per week at a host of stand-up shows staged every evening of the week. Introduced to Glasgow in 2002, Jongleurs is the city's largest comedy club showcasing an eclectic repertoire of international, UK and home-grown comedians. Established in London in the early 1980s, Jongleurs has been instrumental in launching the careers of many alternative and contemporary comedians such as Graham Norton, Lee Evans and Adam Bloom amongst others. Hot and cold snacks as well as large platters are served throughout performances, with the club also featuring a late bar and nightclub open until till 2am Glasgow's vibrant pub scene has recently introduced comedy nights, some housing established comedy clubs since the mid 1990s. The State Bar in Holland Street is a regular haunt for comedy enthusiasts at weekends and presents an excellent programme of local comedians and gives newcomers the opportunity to showcase their stand-up ability in the bar basement. Similarly, Blackfriars Pub in the heart of Glasgow's Merchant City has it's own dedicated comedy club on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and regularly presents familiar faces of the Glasgow comedy circuit. Comedy fever has spread into the vibrant districts of the city's West End and South Side, particularly, The Liquid Ship Pub on Great Western Road, Curlers on Byres Road and Cul de Sac in Shawlands, each showcasing an exciting line-up of both local emerging and established comedians.
